Identifying Gray Leaf Spot & How to Stop It

Keeping a lawn healthy and in top condition is no simple task in our area of Texas. Even when you do have routine lawn care treatments and regular lawn mowing, your lawn can face outside threats such as insects that destroy it and fungal diseases that can kill it off without a fungicide application.

One common fungal disease we often see in the Brazos Valley areas of College Station and Bryan is gray leaf spot. Learn about how this disease affects your grass and how our lawn care company can repair the damage caused by it.

What Is Gray Leaf Spot Disease?

Gray leaf spot shows up usually around August or September in warm and humid conditions. It favors temperatures over 80 degrees, excess moisture, and nightly cloud cover. This disease first shows up with grayish-brown spots that are on the blades of the grass. As it grows, there will be larger reddish-brown areas in your lawn.

Once the disease pops up in your lawn, you only have a few days before it will quickly take over the entire area. The spores spread from blade to blade and will spread within a few hours' time. Gray leaf spot can be confused for other common diseases such as brown patch and Pythium blight, which is why it is essential to have a lawn care professional diagnose and treat the issue.

Gray leaf spot targets certain types of grasses like tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and St. Augustine grass.

How We Treat for Gray Leaf Spot

The best defense against any fungal disease is to implement a lawn care schedule. Routine applications of fertilization and weed control will strengthen a lawn, which provides the grass with a fighting chance. It is also best to adhere to a recommended watering schedule, as too much moisture will provide the prime conditions for this disease to spread.

Once gray leaf spot has invaded, however, there is only a small window of time in which to act. We must apply a fungicide treatment to try and eliminate the threat and contain it. If it has spread too far and gotten hold of more of the grass, it is much more difficult to get rid of gray leaf spot. Damaged grass will need to be removed and replaced with healthy grass.

If a lawn has previously experienced issues with gray leaf spot, it is recommended to:

  • Treat with a fungicide as a preventive treatment in mid-July
  • Do not water late in the day to avoid excess moisture sitting on the grass
